Caring for Your Raw Essence Hair
Raw, unprocessed hair rewards good care with a longer lifespan and better texture retention. Here's how to keep it looking its best.
Washing
Wash every 1–2 weeks using a sulfate-free shampoo and a moisturizing conditioner. Wash in sections, working from root to tip, and avoid piling the hair on top of your head to prevent tangling.
Drying
Air-dry when possible. If you use heat, keep a heat protectant on hand and use the lowest effective setting.
Styling
- Straight: A flat iron on a low-to-medium setting will refresh the look between washes; avoid daily heat styling to protect the cuticle.
- Bodywave: Loosely re-curl with a large-barrel curling wand as needed; finger-comb rather than brushing to preserve the wave pattern.
- Curly: Detangle with fingers or a wide-tooth comb starting at the ends, working upward. A leave-in conditioner or curl cream helps maintain definition.
Sleeping
Braid or loosely bundle the hair and sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase (or wear a satin bonnet) to reduce friction and tangling overnight.
Storage
When not in use, store bundles or units in a breathable bag away from direct sunlight and moisture.
What to avoid
- Sulfate shampoos and heavy silicone products, which build up over time
- Sleeping with wet hair
- Excessive heat without protectant
- Brushing from the roots down (always start at the ends)
With proper care, raw hair can last 3 or more years of regular wear.
